Monday 19th Mar.2012 – Skiing and open air swimming as the sun set :) ****

Good night’s sleep, up early as we have over four inches of snow yesterday and overnight so we wanted to catch the first lift and make the most of the lovely powder :) Just got our skis on as the lift opened at 9:15 a bit of a queue and still cloudy with light snow :( shared the first lift with a nice English couple who own a small apartment here. At the top of the De L’Arselle lift Mag heads down the nice Clairieres blue piste while I head off through the trees mad as usual and end up skiing over rocks losing my pole and ending up in the no skiing snow mobile area !!! Find my way out after a bit of walking and Mag only a little fed-up after waiting 20 minutes for me, we must take the mobiles out with us tomorrow !!! Again today in the poor visibility it was pointless going too high so I enjoyed the off piste from the top of the De Bachat Bouloud with Mag on the piste, after an or so I was fed up of being by myself and started looking for Mag to show her the fantastic fairly easy off-piste in the snow covered trees :) Found her fairly quickly and took her up and we headed down under the lift in low cloud :( we turn skied into a fantastic area of snow covered pines and even though it was steep in places we managed okay but the pines were absolutely full of Crossbills and Coal Tits feeding on the cones and completely ignored us !!! if only we had our binoculars and my better camera :( at one point I was a metre from a bright orange male Crossbill feeding – it would have made a fantastic picture !!! We were hungry now so headed back to the apartment at 12:45 for cuppa soup and croissants – we know how to live :) We were then treated to a great display right outside our patio door as the stunning Crested Tit (we have never seen these before) Gold crest and chaffinch came to drink in the melting snow stream!!! Then it was ski boots on again, followed by the walk up to the lift for the afternoon session armed this time with the better camera and bino’s ! We headed straight to the off-piste Crossbill spot but there were not so many about in the afternoon :( but we did see a few. We tried another lift over in Chamrousse 1750 which took us up higher but you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face so we slowly skied down using the piste markers to guide us. We had time for one more run from the low lift as the sun came out in the powder under the lift all the way!!! Back to the apartment for tea and croissant with apricot jam and as it was such a lovely late afternoon we headed up to the pool for a great swim in the misty, warm water as the sun set over the pine trees :) We did 30 lengths and it wasn’t spoiled too much by German youngsters rolling in the snow bank by the side of the pool and then jumping in right in front of you!!! and I was only hit by one snowball :( Back for a top curry and now setting off out again to see if we can get free Wi-Fi in the swimming pool bar – face book here we come :)
